One Mass is celebrated on Holy Thursday, the beginning of the Sacred Triduum, the three days that follow the journey of Jesus from life to death to resurrection. Holy Thursday is a commemoration of the Last Supper—the meal Jesus shared with his disciples. The meal that Jesus and his disciples shared and that we commemorate this Holy Thursday is regarded in the Church as the institution of the Eucharist. Finally, the washing of the disciples’ feet, recorded in the gospel of John , is re-enacted by priests and parishioners every Holy Thursday as a reminder of the obligation that we have as Christians to be first and foremost servants to one another.
Morning Prayer, part of the Liturgy of the Hours, will be celebrated at 9 am. Mass is not celebrated today On this and the following day, by a most ancient tradition, the Church does not celebrate the Sacraments at all, except for Penance and the Anointing of the Sick. On this day, Holy Communion is distributed to the faithful only within the celebration of the Lord’s Passion. On the afternoon of this day, at three o’clock, there takes place the celebration of the Lord’s Passion consisting of three parts, namely, the Liturgy of the Word, the Adoration of the Cross, and Holy Communion.
The Celebration of the Lord's Passion comprises three parts: I. Liturgy of the Word; II. Veneration of the Cross; III. Holy Communion. All Masses are prohibited.
Time subject to change. The Easter Vigil comprises: Service of Light: blessing of the fire and lighting of the candle, procession, Exsultet. Liturgy of the Word: readings, psalms, prayers, Gloria, homily. Liturgy of Baptism: litany, blessing of water, (Baptism, Confirmation,) renewal of Baptismal promises. Liturgy of the Eucharist: Concluding Rite: Dismissal with Alleluia.
